While Canvas is young compared to the longstanding publications on our campus like Fulcrum and The Oracle, the Hamline University magazine used to be titled Pipers in Depth, but after years of increasingly stagnant content, a team of inspirational creators banded together to transition Pipers in Depth to Canvas with a new invigoration of creative spirit and a willingness to think outside the box.
With so many publications on and around Hamline campus, Canvas wanted to ensure we met a truly unique niche in the intersection point of journalism and creative non-fiction. Our first issue following the re-brand, in Spring 2017, was the start of the revolution that is Canvas magazine.
Each issue that followed was created entirely by its staff at the time. The content, the stories, and the sights inside we’re chosen by our students and the magazine itself was the vision of our design team. Each one is alike only in how it strives to be different and born from the diversity of the creators.
